NATIONAL SUMMARY

Tropical Rainstorm Fay continued to unload heavy rainfall in the
Southeast and central Appalachians Tuesday night and Wednesday.
Despite previous drought conditions, flash flooding was occurring in
a number of communities in the area. Fay has dumped over 2 feet of
rain in parts of Florida and Georgia. Rain began to push into Ohio,
Maryland and West Virginia Wednesday afternoon. North of Fay, a zone
of cool, dry air continued to dominate weather conditions in the
Northeast. Farther to the west, a cold front was slicing into hot air
over the central and northern Plains. The result was locally heavy,
gusty thunderstorms with hail in parts of Nebraska and the Dakotas
Tuesday afternoon and night. The strongest storms were affecting Iowa
and Missouri Wednesday afternoon. Slowly moving thunderstorms dropped
locally heavy rain on parts of Arizona and New Mexico Tuesday night
into Wednesday with isolated cases of flash flooding. A portion of
the rain is being enhanced by the circulation from weakening Tropical
Rainstorm Julio. Rain soaked much of western Washington Tuesday. The
rain had pushed into Idaho and the northern Rockies Wednesday.
Typical late-summer heat baked interior California Tuesday and
Wednesday with highs well into the 90s and low 100s.

SPECIAL WEATHER

The Good With the Bad Southeast Rainfall

Tropical Rainstorm Fay continued to dump heavy rain on a large
portion of the Southeast the past couple of days. The rain was even
falling on hard-hit, drought-stricken areas of northern Georgia,
northwestern South Carolina and western North Carolina. Charlotte
received nearly 6 inches of rain Tuesday into Wednesday. Rainfall for
the year had recovered to 95 percent of normal. Many other locations
still need more rain to catch up to normal levels. However, too much
rain has fallen too quickly in some areas, which has caused flooding.
Water rescues were being performed in Greensboro, N.C., Wednesday.
