This weekend, Jerry Chessman will echo the lyrics of a 32-year-old song.
He wants to ride his bicycle.
In the spirit of Queen's 1978 hit, "Bicycle Race," Mr. Chessman will ride ... and ride ... and ride.
Mr. Chessman, the assistant principal at Shaffer and Wilkins elementaries, said he wants to show his appreciation "for all of the hard work that Woodland Hills students have done in the past year" by pedaling nonstop around the high school parking lot. His goal is to do 250 miles "minimum."
He will start at 4 p.m. Friday, after school, and believes he will finish around 10 or 11 a.m. Saturday.
In an e-mail, Mr. Chessman said he wanted to "draw some attention to the many wonderful students in the WHSD" and to "raise awareness" for the Tour Du District fundraiser, scheduled for Oct. 2 and sponsored by the Woodland Hills Foundation.
He said he selected Labor Day weekend because "our students should be acknowledged for all of their hard work. Please feel free to stop by the high school and say hello."
