Tomato festival on tap in Scottdale; see roses in Manchester

The Sixth Annual Heirloom Tomato Festival, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at West Overton Museums in Scottdale, will feature tomato tasting, a pasta station and savory samples, as well as blacksmith demonstrations and quilts from a nationally prominent museum.

Works from the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Ky., as well as photography and fine arts, will be exhibited, and there will be an artist's and craftsmen's market. Bluegrass band Mountain View will play, and featured speakers include the Post-Gazette's Doug Oster, who also is one of the hosts of KDKA Radio's "Organic Gardener" program.

Rose Festival

The Pittsburgh Rose Society will host a Rose Festival from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Drew Mathieson Horticultural Center in Manchester. The event is free. Handicapped parking is available next to the greenhouse. For more information: www.pghrosesociety.org.
