Montour to retain acting superintendent
Friday, August 27, 2010

Montour School District will keep acting superintendent Don Boyer for as long as a year while the school board looks for a permanent replacement.

The board Thursday night extended its contract with Education Management Group, Dr. Boyer's consulting firm, through September, 2011. It also approved an $11,500 contract with the Pennsylvania School Boards Association to conduct a superintendent search.

Dr. Boyer -- a former superintendent and Education Department official -- was hired on a one-year contract last September after the sudden resignation of Patrick Dworakowski. In 11 months, Dr. Boyer he has revamped and relaunched the district's stalled high school renovation plan, reorganized the district's troubled financial offices and retooled most of the central administrative staff.

That retooling continued last night, as the board named middle school co-principal Christopher Stone as curriculum director. Mr. Stone's previous position is not being immediately filled, partly because Dominic Salopeck remains as a middle school principal and partly because what was the middle school -- grades 5-8 -- is now split. The split is because of the renovation project, with grade 5 at Forest Grove Elementary School, grades 7-8 at Ingram Elementary School and grade 6 at David E. Williams Middle School, which is housing the high school grades for a year.

The board also abolished two positions: Gifted Coordinator and Student Services Coordinator. Dr. Boyer said neither job is listed by the state Department of Education, and that the people holding the jobs -- Gifted Coordinator Bobbie Cegelski and Student Services Coordinator Cindy Caliguire -- were not properly certified to perform some of their duties.

He said the programs the two women ran were not being abolished, but that duties would be reassigned.
