Bill aimed at date violence named for late Monroeville teen
Wednesday, March 10, 2010

HARRISBURG -- The stage is set for final House passage Monday of legislation aimed at increasing education for teens and school teachers, in hopes of stopping or at least decreasing the potential for violence on dates.

The House today named the bill, House Bill 2026, for Demi Brae Cuccia of Monroeville, who was 16 in August 2007 when she was fatally stabbed by her boyfriend. Her father and stepmother, Gary and Johanna Cuccia of Greensburg, came to the House today to see the bill named for his daughter.

Another couple whose daughter survived an attack by her boyfriend using a hammer, Joseph and Grace DeIuliis of Mt. Lebanon, also were here today.

The bill would require all Pennsylvania middle and high schools to add to their curriculums education for students and teachers about the warning signs of teen dating violence. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Scott Conklin, D-Center.

Rep. Joe Markosek, D-Monroeville, said Demi's death was "tragic and we need to stand arm in arm with the families and get this passed, so other families don't have to go through this."

If it passes the House Monday, as expected, it moves on to the Senate.
