Boston's 3-2 win starts seven-game trip on right foot
Sunday, March 07, 2010

Marc Savard scored in the second period and Tim Thomas made 37 saves Saturday to lead Boston past the New York Islanders, 3-2, in the opener of the Bruins' season-high seven-game road trip, which continues today against the Penguins.

Milan Lucic and David Krejci also scored for Boston, which has won two games in a row and six of its past seven to move into seventh in the Eastern Conference standings with 69 points.

The Bruins also have won five games in a row on the road.

Josh Bailey and Matt Moulson scored for the Islanders, whose playoff hopes are fading after dropping two games in a row and 11 of their past 14, leaving them at 60 points.

Other games

• Capitals 2, Rangers 0: Eric Belanger scored his first goal for Washington, fellow trade-deadline pickup Joe Corvo had an assist, and the NHL-leading Capitals beat New York to stretch their club-record home winning streak to 13 games. Two-time league MVP Alex Ovechkin continued his recent slump, failing to get a goal for the sixth consecutive game -- his longest drought this season.

• Lightning 6, Thrashers 2: Steven Stamkos extended his franchise-record points streak to 16 games, scoring twice to raise his goals total to 40 as goalie Antero Niittymaki ran his career record to 17-0-0 against visiting Atlanta.

• Maple Leafs 2, Senators 1: Phil Kessel and Nikolai Kulemin scored on Toronto's first two shootout attempts to give the Maple Leafs a win against host Ottawa.

• Panthers 4, Hurricanes 1: Michael Frolik and Kamil Kreps scored in a 1:11 span of the first period as host Florida snapped Carolina's winning streak at seven games.

Note

• Minnesota forward and repeat offender Derek Boogaard has been suspended for two games after delivering a knee hit on Edmonton forward Ryan Jones. The NHL announced the discipline Saturday. He will forfeit more than $21,000 in pay.
