Penn Hills School District to furlough teachers, other staff
Saturday, March 06, 2010

The Penn Hills School District has given furlough notices to 64 teachers and other professionals, according to the teachers union.

With 412 professionals in the bargaining unit, the notices amount to about 15 percent of the group.

Butch Santicola, spokesman for the Pennsylvania State Education Association, Friday confirmed that the furlough notices for the coming school year were sent out this week. He said the contract requires the district to send furlough notices by March 15.

He said the union was still putting together a list of who will be affected, but the furloughs appear to be throughout the district. He said those who held jobs of administrative assistants also received the notices.

The district could not be reached for comment.
