A look at the major school construction projects

Here's a snapshot of the major suburban school construction projects either in progress or in planning:

Allegheny Valley -- A $13.5 million high school expansion started in January.

Bethel Park -- A new $88 million high school is being built.

Derry Area -- The district broke ground in November on an $18.8 million expansion of Grandview Elementary. When the project is completed in August 2011, the district's two other smaller elementaries will be closed and all of the district's schools, including the high school and middle school, will be on the same campus.

McKeesport -- A $40.3 million project to build two new elementary/intermediate schools is in design and development.

Mt. Lebanon -- Plans for a $113.3 million renovated/new construction high school have been approved.

Montour -- Bids are due March 10 for a projected $45 million renovation of the high school.

Mars Area -- The district is in the middle of a $12.5 million high school upgrade that started in January 2009.

Moon Area -- The district is constructing a new $65 million high school amd then plans a major renovation/conversion of high school to a middle school. The total cost: $125 million.

North Hills -- The district is in the midst a project to renovate and expand three elementary schools. The district has spent $16 million on McIntyre. It will spend another $16 million on Highcliff and projects to spend $21 million on Ross, which hasn't yet gone out to bid.

Penn Hills -- The district is embarking on a $130 million plan to build a new high school and elementary school at the Dible site.

Pine-Richland -- The district is in the design phase for an addition to the high school with a projected cost of $35 million to $42 million.

Plum -- The district is embarking on an elementary program. A new building at Pivik is estimated to cost $20.5 million. Renovations at Adlai Stevenson are projected to cost $7.5 million and the expected cost at Holiday Park is $7.05 million.

South Fayette -- In December, the school board approved a contract with architects to explore the construction of an additional elementary school.

Steel Valley - The district is in the midst of a nearly $3 million expansion of Barrett Elementary, which will add classrooms and a gymnasium. The project is being funded by district benefactor William Campbell.

Upper St. Clair -- The district is spending $55 million for major renovation of Fort Couch and Boyce middle schools and another $5 million on technology and athletic upgrades at the middle and high school.

West Allegheny -- The district is in the middle of a $25 million renovation and expansion project at the high school.

West Mifflin -- The district will spend $33.7 million for a new middle school. Low bidder is Nello Construction. Work will start after approval is received from the state Department of Education.
