Pitcairn man convicted in double slaying
Wednesday, December 03, 2008

The Pitcairn firefighter who killed his wife and her companion outside Don Pablo's Mexican restaurant in Monroeville was convicted of first-degree murder today.

John Lang, 35, was sentenced to consecutive life sentences without parole by Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Jill E. Rangos after he waived his right to delay sentencing.

He shot and killed Tracy Braverman-Lang and Louis Goldenson after he claimed to have seen them embracing and kissing in the parking lot, then calmly called 911 and admitted the crime.

"I just shot and killed my wife and the man she was cheating on me with," Mr. Lang explained in the 911 call, which was played for the jury during his trial. "Shot and killed them both."

Mr. Lang's attorney, Robert Foreman, argued the crime was committed in the heat of passion generated by seeing a cheating spouse, and therefore was voluntary manslaughter. The jury disagreed.

The prosecution and families of the victims disputed Mr. Lang's claim to police that Ms. Braverman-Lang and Mr. Goldenson were lovers. They had been friends since childhood.

Mr. Foreman, who said his client was not a premeditated killer, had asked the jury to come back with a verdict of voluntary manslaughter.

Deputy District Attorney Bruce Beemer, however, pressed for the first-degree murder conviction, which carried the mandatory sentence of life in prison.
