University of South Florida administrators and coaches agreed to waive an NCAA college-football rule requiring home teams to wear dark uniforms, thereby permitting West Virginia to don its white jerseys in their game Saturday night at Mountaineer Field as a White-out celebration for its 19 seniors -- primarily one named White.
"I really want to go on record ... and give a great expression of gratitude to the South Florida Bulls that they've allowed the Mountaineers to wear white jerseys on this final home game for our senior class," Mountaineers coach Bill Stewart said today. "That will always be remembered by the Mountaineer Nation as a class act and a class gesture."
Stewart noted that Patrick White, whom he calls "the greatest winner in college football," would not be the NCAA's all-time leading rusher at quarterback or the Big East's career offense and touchdown-responsibility holder were it not for his teammates and classmates. And they want to celebrate their Senior Night in white.
"Those 19 seniors are why we're having a White out," Stewart said. "It's not Patrick White ... It's Patrick White at the head of the class and the entire pyramid system that helped Patrick White become what he's become," Stewart added. "So our senior class would not want to have it any other way. This is not a one-man show. This is not a one-man outfit. This is not a one-man story. It's a story about 18 brothers lifting up a 19th who happens to have the last name of White is why we're having this White-out."
