Pirates' affiliate in Altoona changes ownership
Monday, December 01, 2008

The Altoona Curve, the Pirates' Class AA affiliate, is being sold by managing general partner Chuck Greenberg back to its original owner, the family of Robert F. Lozinak.

Greenberg, a finalist for the Pirates' team presidency that went to Frank Coonelly last year, bought the Curve in 2001 and turned into one of the most feted franchise in minor league baseball. He will keep his ownership stake with Class A short-season State College.

Greenberg also announced this afternoon that he is creating the Greenberg Sports Group to provide "management, consulting and marketing services to the sports industry across the country." That will include managing the operations of the Curve, State College and Class A Myrtle Beach.

Greenberg issued a statement: "Today's announcement marks a bittersweet day for our ownership group and management team because we have thoroughly enjoyed all of the hard work of building the Altoona Curve into one of the most innovative and well-respected franchises in the country, while enhancing the wonderful fan experience here at beautiful Blair County Ballpark. We have forged so many personal bonds and friendships that we know will last forever. Yet while it is difficult to let go of this wonderful franchise, we are thrilled to be returning the Curve to Bob Lozinak, who had never intended to part with it in the first place."
