Super Saturday is back in WPIAL football.
All four championship games will be played today at Heinz Field. The WPIAL likes to stage the games on Saturdays, but they were played on Fridays the past two years because of scheduling conflicts at Heinz.
This is the 23rd year that all four championship games have been played at one site. The four-game bonanza started in 1986 at Three Rivers Stadium.
Today could be a monumental day for some teams that are trying to earn a page in the history books. Bethel Park is trying to win the first WPIAL championship in school history. Gateway, Beaver Falls and Monaca are trying to win titles for the first time since the 1980s.
Some of the eight teams and coaches already have made history simply by getting to the title games. Thomas Jefferson is the first school to play in a championship game six years in a row. Blackhawk's Joe Hamilton is coaching in a championship game for a WPIAL record 11th time. Aliquippa is playing in its 19th title game. The Class AAAA game is a matchup of undefeated teams for the first time since 1993.
