Albert Witt, who owned and operated one of the oldest pest control companies in Pittsburgh for many years, died Wednesday from complications of kidney disease at an assisted-living facility in Boca Raton, Fla. He was 93.
Mr. Witt, who was born on the Bluff near Duquesne University, served as president and chairman of the board of Witt Pest Management.
"My father gave his life to his family and the pest control business, which his father pioneered in this city and later passed on to him," said his son, Tom Witt.
Witt Pest Management, which was later expanded to include a division called Watch-Guard Systems, is still family-owned and recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. Founded in 1908 by Harry L. Witt, a street salesman who started the company from a roach disinfectant he invented, the company is operated by Albert Witt's grandson, Adam.
A longtime Squirrel Hill resident, Mr. Witt moved to Florida two years ago, when his health had deteriorated after a couple of strokes.
He earned a degree in business management from Duquesne University. His son said he then immersed himself in the family business until he was drafted into the Army during World War II. Stationed in the South Pacific for much of the war, Mr. Witt left the Army with the rank of lieutenant and returned to Pittsburgh to run his father's business.
He expanded the business into janitorial services and in 1984 he was one of five partners who founded a national janitorial supply organization called Pro-Link Inc., which now includes more than 70 member companies and controls more than 100 distribution points across the United States, said Tom Witt.
A lifelong member of Temple Sinai Congregation, Mr. Witt was an avid golfer and a die-hard Pirates and Steelers fan, his son said.
In addition to his son, he is survived by a daughter, Wendy Goldberg and a sister, Miriam Schoen, both of Boca Raton; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral services, which start at 3 p.m. tomorrow in Ralph Schugar Chapel, 5509 Centre Ave., Shadyside. Interment will be in Beth Shalom Cemetery.
