Lake-effect snow bands moving across the region today will cause travel difficulties and school delays, particularly to the north and east of Pittsburgh.
In the city and suburban areas this morning, snow is light in areas except in isolated spots impacted by heavier snow bands.
A winter weather advisory is in effect for Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Clarion, Indiana, Jefferson and Lawrence counties until 6 p.m. About 2 to 4 inches is expected, but isolated spots could receive 5 or 6 inches. Winds gusting to 25 mph will cause blowing and drifting snow.
Fayette, Westmoreland, Cambria and Somerset counties are under a winter storm warning through 6 p.m. There is the possibility of a foot of snow in the mountains.
Preston County, W.Va., and Garrett County, Md., also are under a winter storm warning and could receive as much as a foot of snow. Areas near Lake Erie also will see greater snowfall, probably in excess of 7 inches.
