A man arrested for shooting another man Sunday night in Hazelwood said the victim demanded that he drive him around the city and threatened him with a semiautomatic pistol, according to an affidavit.
Robert McGowen, 23, was charged today with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and carrying a firearm without a license in the shooting, which happened about 9:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Johnston Avenue.
The shooting victim, identified in the affidavit as Matthew Michler, was taken to UPMC Presbyterian where he was listed in critical condition.
Shortly later, Mr. McGowen called the North Side police station and told officers he was responsible for shooting Mr. Michler, the affidavit says.
Mr. McGowen later told detectives he met Mr. Michler at Bishop's Pizza on Brownsville Road in Carrick and Mr. Michler "requested that he take him to several locations so that Michler could collect money that was owed" to another man, the report says. As they were driving around, Mr. Michler "pulled out a semiautomatic pistol and started telling him that he was not playing."
Mr. McGowen told police he keeps a .22-caliber pistol in his truck and that he was able to grab the firearm and shoot Mr. Michler several times as they were driving on Johnston Avenue, according to the affidavit.
Mr. McGowen was in the Allegheny County Jail on $200,000 bond.
