Seniors may get tax rebate
Sunday, October 12, 2008

A property tax rebate program for senior citizens is being considered by the Pine-Richland school board.

The proposed program is similar to a property tax/rent rebate program offered by the state. Rebates would range from $250 to $650, depending on a person's income. Those qualifying include seniors who are 65 or older and widows/widowers age 50 and older. The income limit is $35,000, excluding half of Social Security income.

"I think it's a good idea," said board member Richard Herko at Tuesday's board meeting. "If we can provide these folks some relief, I think we should. This group needs tax relief."

Board President Stephen Hawbaker agreed that the rebate is aimed at a "well deserving group." However, he questioned the concept. "Do we as a board want to offer a rebate to anyone? Our history is no. That's my struggle."

Using 2006 statistics, school board Treasurer Dennis Sundo estimated that the board would have paid out about $99,000 in rebates if the program had been in place in 2006. That represents less than 1 percent of this year's $62.3 million budget.

The board is scheduled to vote on the proposal at its Oct. 21 meeting, which will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the district's administration office, 702 Warrendale Road.
