• Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church has welcomed David A. Billings as organist and associate director of music ministries at the church.

Dr. Billings will work with Katherine Mueller, director of music ministries at the church. He has worked with Ms. Mueller in her position as musical director of the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale.

Dr. Billings and Ms. Mueller replaced Donald Wilkins, who retired.

Dr. Billings' role is varied. He said he is content to spend a great deal of time at the organ. He also helps plan events, rehearses choirs and writes for church publications.

• Dr. John F. Stolz, of Shaler, has received his second Duquesne University Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarship. He also received the award in 1996.

A professor of biological sciences in the Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, Dr. Stolz was presented with the award at the university's annual convocation. He conducts research in microbial ecology and environmental microbiology and holds four active grants totaling $700,000. His work has been published in numerous journals, including Nature and Science.
