The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania is taking applications for its third annual $5,000 scholarship awarded to aspiring journalists. The scholarship will be awarded in May in Pittsburgh at the annual Golden Quills Awards Dinner sponsored by The Press Club. Candidates must be enrolled in an accredited college or university for at least two years and their primary residence must be in one of the 29 counties of Western Pennsylvania. Deadline for applications is Jan. 16. Elliott Co. acquired MVP Turbine Repair, Barnhart, Mo., from Wood Group HIT, USA. The unit will now operate as Elliott MVP Services LLC. The operation was established in 2000 to provide repairs and turnkeyfield service for steam turbines. The 60,000 square foot facility near St. Louis will provide repairs, reconditioning and upgrades to steam and gas turbines.

New Business/New Offices

Garden Ridge opened its first store in Pittsburgh in early September at 2000 Casteel Drive, off Montour Run Road in the former Wickes Furniture store, in Coraopolis. Garden Ridge is a privately held home décor retailer.

Design 3 Architecture has relocated to 300 Oxford Drive, Suite 120, Monroeville, to provide design services for office, retail and light industrial projects.

West Penn Testing Group, a chemical and material testing organization, enhanced its evaluation capabilities with the purchase of a new building at 155 Prominence Drive in Upper Burrell; the building will provide 9,800 square feet of immediate expansion space for its spectrochemical testing group, as well as up to 11,000 square feet of space for the planned growth of the firm's nondestructive testing and material evaluation operations.

Contracts

Kimball signed a contract to deploy a state-of-the-art system supporting the Hospital Emergency Planning Initiative, which supports the broad efforts of the Army's Armament Research Development and Engineering Center under Project National Shield. The initiative will help establish interoperable communications among local first responders and public health systems to enhance rapid response in the event of a terrorist attack or national disaster.

Burns & Scalo Roofing was awarded roofing contracts for Wal-Mart, Alliance, Ohio, and Guardian Self Storage, Pittsburgh.

The Toronto Transit Commission awarded Ansaldo STS -- Union Switch & Signal a contract valued at $13.9 million to design, supply and install a new wayside signaling system for the South Yonge project area of the Yonge-University-Spadina Line, Toronto's oldest and busiest subway line. The South Yonge area consists of about 10 kilometers of mainline track and portions of the Davisville Yard. The area is divided into three interlocking zones and includes 15 stations.
