Zelienople to replace trees cut down for power lines
Sunday, October 05, 2008

The trees that were removed recently along Zelienople streets are expected to be replaced this month.

Borough Manager Don Pepe said four trees were cut down at Grandview Avenue and Main Street because they were intertwined with power lines.

A fifth tree was removed because it was found to be diseased and was shedding limbs.

"When trees become either diseased or become a danger, then they must be dealt with, even when you do not want to see them removed," he said.

The new trees are expected be planted in mid-October, he said.

Mr. Pepe said the borough has contacted professionals to determine which types can be planted in the area to provide shade without growing into the power lines, which are owned by Penn Power in that location, he said.

The borough has received price quotes for the material and installation and will consider action at the next council meeting, he said.

Additional trees were removed on other parts of Grandview Avenue after discussions between Penn Power and private property owners. The borough did not give permission or request that those trees be removed, however, Mr. Pepe said.

"I am hopeful that the property owners will follow our lead and replace them with a tree variety that will be better suited to their location," he said.

Due to recent storm damage, additional tree management will be necessary, Mr. Pepe said.

"But it will be done to protect the public and enhance the beauty of the parks," he said.
