Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Mark Roosevelt today said the district's results on state math and reading tests showed strong gains in proficiency across all grade levels.
At a news conference today, Mr. Roosevelt highlighted grade level and some other results but did not release a school-by-school list. In addition, information on whether the district or various schools made adequate yearly progress, as required under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, is not yet available.
The PSSA is given in math and reading in seven grade levels: grades 3 through 8 and grade 11. In addition to showing gains in proficiency across all grade levels, the district also noted that there were increases in the advanced level on 12 of the 14 state tests.
"There is no doubt that our children are learning more," said Mr. Roosevelt.
He noted various initiatives, including a new curriculum, professional development, principal training and evaluation, diagnostic assessments and instructional coaches.
