Fresh off of a heart stopper at home against the Cleveland Browns, the Steelers travel to the swamps of New Jersey to take on the hapless New York Jets.

Conventional wisdom would infer that the Steelers should romp in this game, but conventional wisdom doesn't always apply in the National Football League, where every team -- even one with a 1-8 record -- is "dangerous" according to Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

October 2, 2007 ~ Slideshow: The Steelerettes ... Memories from a bygone era

Four decades ago, a group of young women from Pittsburgh made sports history when they became professional football's first cheerleaders. The Steelerettes made their debut in 1961, and for nearly a decade brought color and spirit to games played by mostly losing Steelers teams.

They cheered from the sidelines at Pitt Stadium because the Steelers had no other home. But the cheerleaders were all students at what was then Robert Morris Junior College (now Robert Morris University.)

They wore knee-length skirts and, in their first season, hardhats.

And some swashbuckling Steelers introduced Baby Boomers to life in the fast Layne, as in quarterback Bobby Layne, along with coach Raymond (Buddy) Parker's rogues' gallery of Tom (The Bomb) Tracy, Buddy Dial, Eugene (Big Daddy) Lipscomb, John Henry Johnson, Ed Brown, et al.

Feb. 25, 2007 ~ Video: From tragedy, a team is formed

DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY SPORTS: It seemed like a good idea for the coach to ask his Duquesne University basketball players to stay on campus the night of Sept. 16, 2006. Ron Everhart was trying to meld a team from a group of transfer students, recruits and less than a handful of veterans returning from a squad that finished 332nd out of the 334 teams in NCAA Div. I basketball the previous season. It seemed safer to keep the players on the sheltered campus rather than let them roam a city still unfamiliar to most. At 2:48 a.m. Sept. 17 the coach was awakened by a phone call to learn that a fusillade of 9mm and .38-caliber bullets had felled almost half his roster after a campus dance party. Jan. 25, 2007 ~ Slideshow: Hot spot for an icy harvest

FOOD: Mazza Vineyards became the first Pennsylvania winery to make a commercial ice wine in 1984. It has produced as many as 4,000 bottles and as few as 600. The 2006 yield will be about 1,000 bottles. Bob Mazza said he considers ice wine to be his flagship. But producing it comes at a price -- spending a bone-chilling pre-dawn morning in the fields, harvesting the grapes before they can be thawed by the sun.

Jan. 18, 2007 ~ Video: A bashing good time with the Steel City Derby Demons

LIFESTYLE: It's been nearly a year since a group of women began strapping on roller skates and knocking each other over in rinks around Pittsburgh. Now officially known as the Steel City Derby Demons, the group features four teams and will hold its first exhibition bouts, featuring all the teams, at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 27 at BladeRunners in Harmarville. Today's roller derby is a real athletic event, even if it is jazzed up a bit with edgy, tattoo-revealing uniforms, a loud rock aesthetic and oft-naughty names and punky personas for every skater. The majority of those who started the league -- about 50 of the original 70 who tried out -- are still at it and better, not worse, for wear. League organizer Pamela Simmons, who skates as "Suzy Sydal," says "this is a family-friendly event."

Jan. 14, 2007 ~ Slideshow: Blight for sore eyes

CITY NEIGHBORHOODS: Pittsburgh's entrance through the Fort Pitt Tunnel might be the Cinderella of first impressions, but more than 13,000 inbound drivers daily are more familiar with one of the ugly stepsisters. Like many highways, Route 51 is a design-free mishmash of malls, strip malls, box stores, auto-service lots, beer stores, tanning salons, roadside bars and disappearing sidewalks, hardly a glass slipper contender. But when it arrives in the city from Whitehall as Saw Mill Run Boulevard, the four-mile stretch to the Liberty Tunnels is so degraded that it could be a parody of blight.

Jan. 7, 2007 ~ Slideshow: 2006 -- The year in pictures

LIFESTYLE: It was the year that the Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl; the year baseball's All-Stars came to town; the year a near-fatal motorcycle accident involving one of the Super Bowl Champs had a happy ending. 2006 was also the year that saw sorrow when only one miner emerged alive from the Sago mine disaster in West Virginia. It was the year grieving residents of Nickel Mines, Lancaster County, consoled each other after a gunman entered a nearby Amish schoolhouse and shot 10 girls, five of them fatally. And it was the year the city mourned the untimely passing of a new mayor -- and friend -- named Bob. It was a year of art and science, and music and dance in a city known for football. These are the some of the stories that will remain with us in images from the Post-Gazette.

Jan. 4, 2007 ~ Video: Penguins players visit Children's Hospital

PENGUINS: Professional hockey players know a thing or two about playing hurt, but some of the Pittsburgh Penguins got new insight yesterday from a young man from Warren, Ohio. The encounter came about as 20 players fanned out in small groups through Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in Oakland. That's where youthful NHL stars Sidney Crosby, Colby Armstrong and others met James Segel. He was sitting in a hospital bed with fresh stitches from brain surgery the day before. "Sure I have a little pain here and there," Mr. Segel said. "The day that I let my pain bother me is the day that I say. 'bye.' And that's not going to happen."
